In Memoriam: William L. Payne, 1943 - 2010
The people who where privileged to know Bill Payne were suddenly struck with an overwhelming feeling of emptiness when he passed away on Sunday, March 21, 2010. Bill tirelessly extended maximum effort in his goal to achieve excellence in everything that he did. He used his acquired knowledge, skills, and efficient work habits to benefit the people around him. Bill continuously demonstrated his strength of character in family relationships, in scholastics, in the work place, in study and learning, in extreme sports and in his non-profit organization activities. Bill and his wife Camille, throughout their forty-two year marriage, cherished each other while retaining their individuality and personal interests through a relationship of love, caring, sharing and mutual respect.
Bill earned his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in mathematics. He was a celebrated employee of U.S. Department of Energy contractors for forty years. Additionally, Bill excelled at extreme physical activities and extreme mental activities. His physical activities included bicycling, marathon running, scuba diving, hiking, rock climbing, kayaking and bowling. Mathematics, physics, computer programming and photography were at the core of Bill's lifetime pursuit of acquiring knowledge by studying and then applying what he learned. Bill had an active involvement with non-profit organizations including National Audubon Society, Sierra Club, Photographic Society of America and Nevada Camera Club.
Bill joined Photographic Society of America in 1989. He served PSA as an Area Representative and attended PSA International Conferences. He participated in PSA Stereo Division Study Groups and served as a Study Group Director. He also was a Stereo Photo of the Year judge and Camera Club Newsletter Contest judge.
Bill Joined Nevada Camera Club in 1988. He served as Vice President and then served four consecutive terms of office as President. Bill chaired numerous committees including Club Publications and Newsletter Editor, Creative Photography Specific Interest Group, Exploring PSA Specific Interest Group and Past Presidents' Advisory Council Representative. He presented many photography programs and workshops, judged numerous photography competitions and authored an extensive number of newsletter articles. While serving on the Nevada Camera Club Executive Board, Bill co-authored most of the club's written documents. Bill is the recipient of the Nevada Camera Club Diamond Award which is the organization's highest award.
