On June 10th, John Zablocki, who leads The Nature Conservancy’s project on freshwater conservation and renewable energy development in the western Balkan Peninsula of Europe, will speak about, "The race to save the Blue Heart of Europe: conservation, development, and the future of Europe's last wild rivers." The Balkan region is now on the brink of a hydropower development boom of global proportions, with hundreds, if not thousands, of new hydropower projects planned and under construction. What remains to be seen is the way it will happen. The Balkan Peninsula of southeastern Europe is home to the continent's most intact and biologically rich river systems. The region is now however at a crossroads. A hydropower development boom of global proportions, with thousands of new hydropower projects planned or under construction, is now underway. Can the region meet its development goals without sacrificing its unique natural heritage? John's talk will explore these issues in the Balkans with an eye toward the bigger picture challenges of nature conservation in the 21st century, including here at home in Nevada. John is also The Nature Conservancy’s Mojave Desert Program Director based in Las Vegas, NV. He served as a US Fulbright Scholar to Slovenia, worked as a conservation biologist on endangered species recovery in the Southwest USA, and as a marine fisheries observer aboard commercial tuna long-line fleets in Hawaii and American Samoa. John holds an MS in Biodiversity, Conservation and Management from the University of Oxford, and a BS in Chemistry and BA in Spanish from the University of Montana. Join us on the 10th to see images of magnificent countryside undergoing massive change. Definitely an interesting evening! It promises to be a view few of us have seen, to hear and see a point of view some have not considered.
Join us at the Sunrise Hospital Auditorium and bring a friend!
