SUBJECT: Death Valley Field Trip

Field Trip to Death Valley – February 20th. – 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM

Led By Harriet Smith. I can also be reached at 401-6566 or Harriet@fortheloveofafrica.com.

The route for our next field trip scheduled for Saturday, February 20th to Death Valley National Park has several changes due to the southern road being closed.

We will meet at the Red Rock Casino parking lot (NOT the parking garages) - the NW corner of the parking lot that is very close to Charleston Blvd and 215 at 6:00am and will be on our way at 6:15am.

We will drive via US 95, past Indian Springs and Mercury. Make a left at Lathrop Wells (heading south) which will put us on Highway 373. We will proceed south on Highway 373 to Death Valley Junction and turn right (west) onto Highway 190 which will lead us past Zabriskie Point and directly to Furnace Creek. It might be good to go this way for another reason – we could make our first stop (unless we see some roadside blooms before Furnace Creek) at the Visitor Center so that everyone can settle up with paying or showing their pass, and get the most current information on wildflower sightings from the rangers there before heading out. They might have more complete and current information for us compared to what we are reading on the internet.

Peak Blooming Periods for Death Valley are usually Mid-February to Mid-April but you never know with nature so there could be a last minute change or an additional drive to Death Valley at the last minute.

I’m sure some of you may want to drive together and share gas so you can safely leave your car in the parking lot until we return in the evening. Our day will be full so bring food and lots of water along as there aren’t many places for food along the way. We will stop for lunch at 1:00 Pm at the nearest picnic area.

Bring your camera, a good assortment of lenses including macro, extra batteries and cards, tripod and cable release if you have one. Bring layered clothes as the temperature in the desert can change drastically during the day and night so be prepared. Also bring a hat, sun glasses and sunscreen. There is a $20.00 entrance fee, per vehicle, unless you have an annual or year’s pass.

Please send me an email so I can get an idea of how many people will be attending. If you have any questions please contact Harriet Smith at Harriet@fortheloveofafrica.com.
